A Stress Reliever We Won’t Argue About

According to a new Swiss study, published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, consuming 50 grams of dark chocolate before a stressful event may help halt the increase of stress hormones; cortisol and epinephrine.1 The randomized study had men consume either dark chocolate or a placebo two hours before a stress test was given to them. The results showed that the men who had consumed the dark chocolate had a dulled response of cortisol and epinephrine levels after being subjected to a mock job interview and mental arithmetic task in front of an audience.

The reason behind the decrease in stress levels through the consumption of dark chocolate have been linked to the flavanols found in cocoa; particularly epicatechin. A 100 gram dark chocolate bar is said to contain about 41.50 mg of epicatechin compared to a milk chocolate bar which contains about 10.45 mg. Other studies conducted on dark chocolate have found similar results as the recent Swiss study. In 2009, a study published in the Journal of Proteome Research, found that consuming 40 grams of dark chocolate per day, for two weeks helped reduce stress hormones; cortisol and catecholamines.2 A similar study in 2013 found that cocoa flavanols may help enhance your mood, keeping you calmer and more content, but not affecting ones cognitive performance.3
